The Different Types Of Eyeshadow Brushes - And When To Use Them!

The Many Different Types Of Eyeshadow Brushes

Estimated Read Time: 2 minutes

If you’re an eyeshadow brush novice, you may be a bit confused by the many different types of eyeshadow brushes available on the market! Where do you start?

There are so many types and styles, each promising that they will add something different to your look. But, there’s no need to overwhelm yourself by buying one of every type. You want a few, good quality types of eyeshadow brushes, many of which can be used in multiple directions and ways, so you should have more than enough for a daily look.

Plus, if you invest in good quality eyeshadow brushes and look after them well, they can last for many years to come. So, what are the different types of eyeshadow brushes? And, what ones do you really need…?

What Do Different Types Of Eyeshadow Brush Do?

Different eyeshadow brushes have different purposes. Let’s take a look at the different shapes of eyeshadow brushes, and what each type of eyeshadow brush does:

Flat Eyeshadow Brushes

Flat brushes are often called “shader” brushes, and are mostly used for applying one bold colour across the entire lid. Because they are very dense, they allow for a heavier pick-up of product, and therefore create a stronger pigment on the eye.

Fluffy Eyeshadow Brushes

Larger, fluffy eyeshadow brushes are amazing for a simple all-over colour. Fluffy brushes allow for a soft diffusion of eyeshadow, and are therefore useful to apply an all-over base shade. These types of eyeshadow brushes are also useful for eyeshadow novices, as they blend colour seamlessly.

Pointed/Angled Eyeshadow Brushes

These types of eyeshadow brushes are mainly used for eyeliner. You can use gel or powder eyeliner in conjunction with these types of eyeshadow brushes, instead of a traditional liquid liner. The pointed and angled edge allows for a defined cat-eye or winged look.

Smudger Eyeshadow Brushes

These small, dense brushes are great for smudging eyeshadow or liner underneath your eye. This can be used for a softer alternative to a traditional eyeliner.

Lash & Brow Eyeshadow Brushes

Often this type of eyeshadow brush looks like a little hairbrush! It is sometimes referred to as a “spoolie”. This type of eyeshadow brush is useful for removing any clumps from freshly applied mascara, and taming wild brows!

Which Types of Eyeshadow Brushes Do You Need In Your Collection?

The types of eyeshadow brushes you need are totally up to you, and the type of makeup you like to wear!

If you like a natural look, and often find yourself applying just one shade of eyeshadow, you may find simply owning one or two fluffy blending brushes is more than enough. However if you like a heavier look, or love to experiment with different types of makeup, you might decide that you need at least one of each type of eyeshadow brush – if not a few of each!

Caring For Your Different Types of Eyeshadow Brushes

The good news is that all different types of eyeshadow brushes can be cleaned and cared for in the same way, so you don’t need to remember different things for different brushes! If you wear makeup regularly, it’s recommended you clean your eyeshadow brushes at least once a week, or whenever you switch between multiple colours.

Cleaning your different types of eyeshadow brushes is really easy! Simply squeeze some washing up liquid or gentle shampoo into a glass, and top the glass up with warm water. Then, swirl the brushes in the mixture, and manipulate the bristles with your hands to remove any excess dirt and makeup. Then, rinse. You may need to do this a few times, so keep going until the water running out of the brushes is completely clean!

Once all your brushes are clean, simply lay your eyeshadow brushes on a fresh towel, and allow to completely dry before use again. You can clean the handles with an antibacterial spray, too!

Remember, you can have all the eyeshadow brushes in the world, but nothing sets off a beautiful eye like a strong and luscious set of lashes and healthy brows! Invest in an ethical, luxurious mascara and look after your eyelashes and brows with a nourishing serum like 100% Castor Oil.
