How Do Stem Cells Regrow Hair? The Science Behind Cel

Stem Cells & Hair Regrowth: Learn About The Relationship

Plant stem cells are starting to become more of a common advertisement for hair care brands targeting hair loss and thinning. But, what’s so special about them? What’s the science behind stem cells and hair growth? And, why are we here at Cel, so invested in them?

Stem Cell Hair Regrowth: What Are Plant Stem Cells?

Stem cells are essentially non-specialised cells that are capable of renewing themselves! And, they’re found in plants.

But, we have stem cells too, us humans. And, they’re the most important cells in our skin. They’re the source of regeneration and repair and stem cells form new hair too.

Plant stem cells possess similar genetic factors as human stem cells and can be used to influence the function of certain cells in our skin and hair follicles.

By using plant stem cells in your hair care products, you’re actively encompassing the technology of plant stem cells into the existing work of your body’s own stem cells, which helps increase the hair follicle lifespan so it can stay in the growing phase of its growth cycle for longer.

Stem Cell Hair Regrowth: What’s The Hair Growth Cycle?

ANAGEN: THE GROWTH STAGE

This is the stage where the hair follicles receive nutrients and oxygen, which allows each individual hair strand to grow. It’s the active phase of growth in the cycle, and it can last anywhere between 2 and 8 years.

CATAGEN: THE TRANSITION STAGE

When a hair strand stops growing, it means it’s reached the catagen stage. It stops because it is cut off from retrieving nutrients at the follicle. Hair strands can remain at this stage for around 4-6 weeks.

TELOGEN: THE REST STAGE

The dead hair is ready to fall out when it reaches the telogen stage. But it can take up to 3 months before the hair finally leaves the head.

While it’s waiting, the hair follicles prepare to restart the cycle by generating new hair. It will then enter the pre-anagen stage, ready for another round!

So, when you see some hair in the plug hole or the carpet, that’s usually because that strand met the telogen stage and it’s a perfectly normal process if it is in small amounts.

More obvious hair loss occurs when the body becomes stuck in the telogen phase. This can be down to many things: from genetics, hormonal changes (menopause or giving birth), or an immune system disorder, to hair pulling hairstyles or psychological compulsive disorders that cause people to pull out there own hair!

In addition, as we age, our hair follicles can become dormant completely or shrink in size. When they shrink in size it means that they still produce hair, but each strand may be much lighter, thinner and more brittle than before, so it appears almost like there’s no hair growth at all.

Plant stem cells help keep your hair in the anagen phase for longer and promote higher quality hair strands too.

And, how do we know this? Well, because we conducted our own scientific study…

Stem Cell Hair Regrowth: The Proof Is In Our Products

In 2018, here at Cel, we conducted a clinical trial under the supervision of specialists in dermatology and trichology, to determine the hair-growth effect of Asparagus Stem Cells compared to a controlled placebo group.

The trial was undertaken on 88 individuals with normal hair conditions, across all genders.

The purpose of the trial was to see the characteristics of the ingredient (asparagus stem vesicle at 5.5%) found in our Microstem Hair Stimulation Formula. We looked at how it affected hair growth, follicle stimulation, and the maintenance of healthy, thicker hair.

The study was split into 3 timeframes, T0, T1, and T2, over a 16-week period:

T0: before the trial, T1: after 8 weeks, and T2: after 16 weeks of topical application.

After just 72 hours of treating the hair and scalp with our Microstem Hair Stimulation Formula, the production of Cytokeratin-15 (considered an essential protein for hair growth) had increased by 277%, compared to the control group. Yeah… Wow!

After 16 weeks, the average total hair amount increased by 7.5%, and hair thickness increased by 2.8%, which we’re sure you’ll agree is super impressive. But, not only was the condition of existing strands improved, but the total quantity of hair follicles increased by 20.7% after the 16 weeks too, and the quantity of dormant (empty) follicles reduced by 25.1%!

Yep, we almost couldn’t believe it either!
